Myself
Derric Clemmons is an established, self taught Artist and resident of the Southern community of Chicago. Since 1995, His work entails a vivid view of lifes transitions and challenges in the historic community of South Shore / Southeast lakefront.
Themes of identity, culture, industry, struggle and the question of what is ahead for cultures of people of color. His work weaves the spirit of optimism while ‘sweating’ through historically divisive social context. He is inspired by the likes of Jacob Lawrence, Stuart Davis, Jack Whitten, Picasso and DeKooning.
His style is considered an amalgam of expressive murky strokes, semi-geometrics and backgrounds of emotional color, structure and applications of found objects that add historical-ness’ to the themes. His work is collected throughout the US. Derric has done a number of sculptural works for public spaces, and produced youth mentoring art workshops and training to schools and communities in need of cultural enrichment.

Tomorrow’s Humans - “A World of Her
Own”
On the subject of recent work, I’ve been paying attention to the past and present of the transformation of civilization and communities. This work examines the evolution of cultures, societal pressures, and our response to the divisiveness and lack of structure experienced.
“A World of Her Own” examines how society attempts to cope with the turmoil and disappointment of broken structure in society by creating a world of her own. She faces challenges by developing a positive view. A determination to cope and go forward.
